Grease Lightning Oven Cleaning

I started working with Danny at Grease Lightning way back in 2010. At the time I was running the marketing for a software company and one day the receptionist there approached me to say that her boyfriend had just been made redundant from an oven cleaning firm and was thinking of setting up his own company. Could I help?

Other than the company name he really didn't have much else in terms of marketing, so it was over to me to start creating. I put together a website for him that had various SEO landing pages, all optimised to the different locations he covered. A lot of these raised up to the top of Google (SEO was much simpler back then), but the real boost came with the utilisation of Google Ads.

The SEO landing pages really helped with the Google Ads and almost immediately he was getting enquiries. Unlike now when Google pushes their Ads onto just about anyone, it wasn't overly used at the time, so a lack of competition meant it was relatively cheap.

I still manage the Google Ads for him today, and since the SEO has become vastly more complicated than it was 14 years ago, that takes up a considerable amount of time and finesse. I think we're now on the third iteration of the website, but 14 years ago, 'responsive design' wasn't even a term.

Danny has always been happy to keep things relatively small, so mainly works around Surrey and North Hampshire, but through the Google Ads he received about 380 new oven cleaning enquiries in March 2024 and the SEO resulted in roughly 350 organic site visits.

From being made redundant, he now has a team of five oven cleaners and has recently expanded into offering carpet cleaning as well. He's also good fun to have pint with and is rubbish at darts!


Vacuum Doctor

Darren approached me shortly after I went freelance for the first time in 2012. He happened to know an existing client of mine and when bemoaning his lack of an online presence, this client said, "call Carl".

At the time he was running a cleaning supply shop with a side line in vacuum cleaner repairs, but a combination of the stupidly high, and ever increasing, overheads involved in owning a shop, plus the growth in the vacuum repair side of the business, saw him switch exclusively to the repair side of the business.

The online marketing has gone through a wide variety of changes over the years. Initially we started with a load of different websites, each focused on a different brand e.g. dyson-doctor.co.uk, sebodoctor, henrydoctor, mieledoctor, repairdoctor...plus a few more I can't even remember. Now it's almost all consolidated under the one brand / website (www.vacuumdoctor.co.uk), but the dyson-doctor website has been retained since it still ranks really well in Google.

Now the website is set up for SEO with various location focused pages, but primarily it's set up for 'brand + repairs' or 'brand + servicing'. The two sites combined generate about 1000 organic clicks per month, which in March 2024 turned into over 450 email enquiries and a significant amount more via phone calls.

The business is doing so well that both Darren's son and wife now work in the business, and we've had various conversations about franchising options, which is a very exciting possibility.
